HOW MUCH TIME

How much time will you need to spend in Costa Rica for your dental work?

VENEERS, CROWNS AND BRIDGES, AND ROOT CANALS

Most teeth are prepared for crowns, bridges and veneers quite quickly.

If you need 4 crowns, the teeth can be prepared in 1 to 2 days. The biggest wait is for the lab to complete the actual crowns and bridges.

This usually takes about 5 days, Whenever we do root canal work, additional time is necessary. Depending on the extent of the infection, it may be necessary to complete the root canal in 2 visits. In this case, you will need an additional 3 days. In some root canals, it is necessary to use a post before a crown can be put on the tooth.

IMPLANTS

Dental implants can be done rather quickly. The surgery itself takes about 40 minutes per implant, but we have had many people leave the day after surgery. In these cases, we would use sutures that come out on their own after 5 days, so that you don’t need to see a doctor or dentist to have them removed.

When a bone graft is necessary, or the bone quality and size is not appropriate, the general protocol states that you should wait three months with the lower jaw and four months with the upper jaw before placing the prosthesis over the dental implants. In those cases you will need to visit Costa Rica twice. For the first stage you will need to stay one week, and in the second stage, 14 days.

For the surgical stage you will need to stay for 3 days in Costa Rica.

For the prosthetic stage you will need a stay of 14 days in Costa Rica.

With the new techniques available we can perform the one stage technique, which means we can place a fixed prosthesis the same day we place dental implants. This can be achieved when the bone quality and size is adequate. It can be done in one stage, with a stay of 21 days in Costa Rica, in only one visit. About 20% of our patients are treated with this technique. Every day more patients are available to this technique.

So, for example, if you need implants, crowns, and some teeth require root canals

Day 1. Consult and treatment planning. Initial oral exam (four films, diagnostic photographs, prophylaxis and scaling, oral hygiene instruction, topical fluoride application).
If you are ready, we would start the root canal treatments and the built up.
Day 2. Initial implant placement: This procedure is performed in our office under a local anesthesia. For those who prefer it, we can also use IV sedation.
Day 3. Control of the implants
Day 4. Fly out
After the implant has had time to integrate into your jaw bone (usually three months in the lower jaw and four months in the upper jaw).

SECOND STAGE

Day 1. Prepare teeth for the crowns or veneers, take impressions of the tooth and the implants, send impressions to the lab.
Day 2-10.Wait for lab to complete work. A great time to do all of the activities that Costa Rica has to offer.!
Day 11.Check the color, adjustments of the crowns, veneers.
Day 13. Delivery and cement all the dental work and adjust the bite.
Day 14. Fly out

IF YOU NEED CROWNS, VENEERS WITHOUT IMPLANTS

Day 1. Consult and treatment planning. Initial oral exam (four films, diagnostic photographs, prophylaxis and scaling, oral hygiene instruction, topical fluoride application).
If you are ready and if you need, we would start the root canal treatments and the built up.
Day 2.
Prepare teeth for the crowns or veneers, take impressions, send impressions to the lab.
Day 2-10.
Wait for lab to complete work. A great time to do all of the activites that Costa Rica has to offer.!
Day 10.
Check the color, adjustments of the crowns and veneers.
Day 11. Delivery and cement all the dental work and adjust the bite.
Day 12. Fly out

Remember, this is a best-case scenario. You can count on a 2 day delay 20% of the time, so giving yourself 2 extra days is better. You can always change your departure date to leave earlier.

The labs know that you are only here for so many days, and they specialize in this type of work, so they have your best interests at heart. They really do try to make it work, but occasionally they do have delays.

Your time required can vary greatly, so we suggest that you call us or send us a mail o discuss your case and to give you a better idea of how much time you will need.Patients that undergo this treatment should have good general health.
